Alpha Model UHS Milligaussmeter

        Measures ELF/VLF Magnetic Fields

                Purchase Price: $279, 7-Day Rental: $70

This is the meter we often recommend for accurate and easy measurement of magnetic fields (from power lines, transformers, electrical meters and panels, wiring, lights, clocks, appliances, and most other electrical sources).  You simply turn the meter on, hold it wherever you wish to test, and then read the number on the display.  This meter is recommended for testing the magnetic fields from power lines and building wiring before you buy or rent a new home.

Important Feature #1:  The Alpha UHS is an accurate triple-axis gaussmeter.  Most gaussmeters are the single-axis type, which can measure only one direction at a time.  Thus, you must rotate the meter around manually and find the highest field direction.  And to get a truly accurate measurement, you must position a single-axis meter in three orthogonal directions and perform a math calculation to get the actual field strength.  In contrast, a triple-axis meter has three sensor coils built in, so it can take the three measurements simultaneously and do the math.  Most people will take much more accurate readings with a triple-axis meter, because it is so easy to miss the strongest direction with a single-axis meter and underestimate the true field strength.

Important Feature #2:  The Alpha UHS detects a wide range of frequencies including the ELF and VLF frequency ranges.  Most gaussmeters detect only in the ELF frequency range.  ELF includes the common 60 Hz frequency fields from power lines, wiring, refrigerators, transformers, lights, appliances everything that runs on regular electrical power.  VLF includes higher frequencies in the range of 10,000 Hz and more, that often come from televisions, computers, electronics, fluorescent lights, and compact fluorescent bulbs.  The Alpha UHS allows you to measure the ELF and VLF together, or measure the VLF separately.
