Magnetic Foil for Shielding of Magnetic Fields...

Special high-performance alloys have been developed for the shielding of magnetic fields.  These materials are commonly called MuMetal® or other trade names depending on the particular manufacturer.

The products below are the best materials available today for the shielding of ELF (extremely-low-frequency) magnetic fields emitted from transformers, meter and breaker panels, refrigerators, motors, appliances, computers, TVs and other common electrical sources.

Product:  4 Mil Thickness High Permeability Magnetic Foil Sturdy and tough 0.004 inch thick material, by 15 inches wide.  Can be cut to any desired length, per your order.  This 80% nickel shield alloy is fully annealed and ready for use (Specification: MIL-N-14411, COMP 1).  Price: $19.95 per linear foot, plus shipping.  ($10 cutting fee on orders less than $100.)

Product:  6 Mil Thickness High Permeability Magnetic Foil Sturdy and tough 0.006 inch thick material, by 15 inches wide.  Can be cut to any desired length, per your order.  This 80% nickel shield alloy is also fully annealed and ready for use (Specification: MIL-N-14411, COMP 1).  Price: $29.95 per linear foot, plus shipping.  ($10 cutting fee on orders less than $100.)

Although these shielding materials can be ordered in thicker formats, we recommend the two foils above because they are thin enough to (1) cut with a scissors, (2) bend into shape by hand, and (3) staple or nail to a wall.

Basically, the shielding layers are additive for example, two layers of the 4 mil thickness would have the same shielding strength as one layer of an 8 mil material.  (Note: a "mil" equals one-hundredth of an inch.)  Thus, two layers of the 6 mil product above, are essentially equal to three layers of the 4 mil product.

The shielding materials above are easy and ready to use, but you must be careful not to overheat them, as excess heat from drilling, cutting or bending can permanently reduce the shielding capacity of the material.

Important note:  We recommend that before you do any shielding, every attempt should be made to (1) correct any underlying electrical problems causing high magnetic fields, (2) re-arrange the environment to simply get more distance from the source, and/or (3) consider removing, relocating or turning off the source.

Proper shielding of the magnetic fields is both a science and an art.  In all cases, a gaussmeter is recommended to help determine the optimum shape and position of the shielding, and also to confirm that the magnetic fields are indeed reduced.  (Improper shielding can actually increase or amplify the fields.)

Most people will need a little bit of technical guidance to properly install their shielding.  Therefore, we offer telephone consultations to help guide you through the simple design and installation steps for your project typically about 10 to 20 minutes of consulting time.  Call us at 1-800-638-3781.
